1. Stay Alert<\/span><\/strong><\/div>\n
You should be watching the\u00a0teasers. A good captain &\u00a0mate will be on top of things\u00a0<\/span>but there have been countless\u00a0times when one of the anglers\u00a0has spotted a fish before one of t<\/span>he working crew. Stay alert so\u00a0you don\u2019t miss any chances.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span>Binoculars can help too, especially on a calm day, but if your are prone to seasickness, avoid them.<\/span><\/div>\n<\/div>\n

2. Take a few\u00a0practice swings<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<\/div>\n

You will be casting a large fly on a\u00a0heavy rod with a heavy line. It won\u2019t feel\u00a0normal if you\u2019ve been casting a 6 or 8\u00a0<\/span>weight. A 14 weight feels like a baseball\u00a0bat compared to a 6 weight. Don\u2019t worry\u00a0about it, just focus on getting the fly\u00a0behind the teaser. Most times a 25 foot\u00a0roll cast will do it. Stay focused on the fish and not how pretty your cast is or\u00a0how strange the heavier gear feels. You\u00a0definitely want to \u201cchoke up\u201d and take\u00a0a few swings before hand.<\/span><\/div>\n

3. The Double Fly<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<\/div>\n

Sometimes despite how good the fly is, you might need two. If you\u00a0are not using the Trey Combs\u00a0<\/span>double hook style fly, you might\u00a0want to try the double fly. Tie a\u00a0popper fly & baitfish fly together\u00a0<\/span>using a 4-6 inch piece of 100 lb\u00a0mono. Tie one end to the\u00a0<\/span>hook\u00a0of the popper and the other to\u00a0<\/span>the eye of the baitfish hook (or\u00a0vice-versa). This will increase the number of a<\/span>ctual hookups.<\/span><\/div>\n

4. Quick change<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<\/div>\n

Use a quick change loop connection\u00a0to connect your tippet & fly. Be ready\u00a0to change quickly when on the boat.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span>Sometimes the need may arise for\u00a0you to change flies for one reason or another and a loop connection is\u00a0always the best way to go. Marlin have\u00a0great vision, but at 30 mph, they won\u2019t\u00a0be leader shy. Have different popper\u00a0& fish color combinations in singles &\u00a0double fly ready at all times.\u00a0 Don’t forget to make your loop big enough to pass the fly through.<\/span><\/div>\n

5. Use your muscle<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<\/div>\n

Unlike the finesse required for flats fish,\u00a0 sometimes you need to muscle a billfish,\u00a0especially on the fly.\u00a0 If you are using a\u00a0typical 9 foot fly rod, you will struggle\u00a0to lift the head of these powerful fish.\u00a0When you can pull on him with gentle\u00a0consistent pressure, gradually adding some drag and gain line in that manner.\u00a0 When a fish is sounding, there is nothing you can do except try not to lose too much line.\u00a0 When the fish is jumping, this is our opportunity to work aggressively and take as much line back as you can. The fight could take an hour or more at\u00a0times so do anything you can to speed\u00a0things along, take advantage. It\u2019s better for the angler but\u00a0especially better for the fish.<\/span><\/div>\n
